Monthly Report August

Written by Teacher Margaret

Jambo y'all, we hope this finds you well. We too are well despite the challenges caused by Covid 19. Its now official that schools will open in 2021. This is due to the increasing numbers of new Covid 19 cases in Kenya. Kenya and especially Nairobi is recording very high numbers than ever before. This has become a big challenge to vulnerable families. Livelihoods have been forced to change due to lack of income. As we all know, most of happy day families live from hand to mouth and covid has made it even worse. We have been giving food twice a month to happy day families and now is the time they need us even more. An example is a family that consists of two parents and five children with no form of income and living in a rented shanty. When I visit such a family I feel so much sympathy because they expect some help from us. Me and you have been of great help to such families and we should continue doing it for our fellow humans. We who visit them cannot even explain the joy they get when they see us. Its been a good feeling to see a sad face light up in joy and happiness when they receive a hamper from us. May all those who make it possible continue to be blessed. We will bring live coverage from families who will accept to be filmed so that you can all see the joy. We hope we will continue sponsoring this program as time goes by.

Our July / August budget is as follows ::::
Salaries......... 80000
Insurance.......18000
Water...............3000
Food............. 62000
Liquid soap.... 3500
TOTAL....... 166500

We received half of our salaries in the middle of the month.... We are forever grateful

Monthly Report July

Written by Teacher Margaret

Jambo y'all. It's yet another end of month which would have been second term mid term in the normal school calendar in Kenya. Unfortunately it's not due to the Corona virus. We are waiting for a government directive on measures to take for schools to re open. We are set to reopen gradually but we even don't know when that will be. Right now Nairobi is reporting the highest number of positive cases since Corona came. Yesterday Nairobi alone had over 100 new cases and this is an indication that schools might not open soon.
The closure of schools has denied our vulnerable families the daily school meals that we had been providing. As we all know that food had been the only food some kids get due to poverty. Right now families have to depend on handouts from wellwishers like me and you for survival. We at Happy Day have been very lucky because we have you our friends and supporters during this pandemic. We have been getting foodstuffs, soap and toiletries twice a month and we are very grateful. May each one of you be blessed. We are forever grateful. We have also allowed families that live near the school to get free water from our storage. Until schools get back to normal or we get a new normal, food will continue to be a big challenge to the families. Most parents were laid off from work immediately Corona arrived and so they don't have any form of income. Most of them were casual labourers and so the work from home does not apply to them.
We will continue updating about any new developments in the education sector which might have new requirements for the reopening of schools.

Our June/ July budget is as follows :
Salaries........ 80000
Insurance......18000
Water..............3000
Food............ 62000
Liquid soap.... 3500
TOTAL...... 166500

In addition to this, we have given the staff half salary earlier i June and we also distributed food for KSh 62000 mid June.

We don't know how long we can keep this up. We should be able to deliver food in mid July, but then we have to get support from YOU to manage the 1. of august expences. We keep hoping that people will continue to support extra.

Thank you!!

Monthly Report June

Written by Teacher Margaret

Jambo Happy day friends and family.
We hope this finds you well. We are also doing well too despite the had times experienced worldwide due to the pandemic. As we all know, many families have lost their source of income and life has become very hard for all. Almost all happy day families are now unable to earn any form of income for their families and I have to report that this is not going away any day soon. We have increased number of new Covid 19 cases especially in the last few days. The Kenyan government has began mass testing and so they are reporting very many cases. This shows that if the trend continues schools will not open any day soon.
We have been able to distribute foodstuffs, soaps and tissues twice a month since the closure of schools... We are very grateful to you all who have made it possible. We have also distributed face masks to our families.

Children who are able to access the internet are e-learning while those from the slums and other unprivileged families have to sit until schools reopen. Our kids fall in the waiting category. Anyway, we shall overcome. Non of happy day families has access to a computer and those who have phones they still can't afford to buy the data bundles to download the school work given. Some elite schools are learning via zoom meeting but I don't think that our kids know what that is.

This week I was working on the hand washing water cans like the one in the above picture and we have around 20 of them in use. The rest of them will be distributed as soon as taps have been fixed. Again thanks to Annelene's mom who made it possible. May you all be blessed.

We made liquid soap for our families. Each family gets a litre of the soap for hand washing. This is a measure of complying with the government guidelines on hand washing and also for personal hygiene. The local administration is also working towards giving some foodstuffs to residents of the slum areas and I am hopeful that our happy day families will benefit from the project too. This will go a long way in helping the families to feed their kids. I am engaging the local administration so that they can use our school as a point of collection for the neighborhood so that our families can be sure of receiving
Due to the effects of the pandemic and the closure of schools, our kids have to endure hunger when the food we give gets finished. When schools are on, our kids eat at school and we have not had cases of malnutrition. Right now some of them are already showing signs of being malnourished. This is due to low income or no income for their parents. The government has put restrictions as a way of lowering the curve and the impact is very huge especially to the most poor.
We hope to add on our food supplies, so that we can provide more food for the families. We have set up a budget and hope to distribute  this twice a month to 50 families:

Budget per family
Sugar..... 1kg .......... 110
Salt...... 500gm..........30
Beans 1 kg ............. 120
Rice.....1kg............. 100
Maize flour 4kg...... 240
Wheat flour 2 kg...... 130
Cooking oil 1 litre.... 100
Bar soap 1kg.............130
2 tissue paper............. 40
Porridge flour 1kg.... 100
Greengrams 1kg...    .140

TOTAL.... 1240 ksh

OUR MAY/ JUNE BUDGET IS AS FOLLOWS.
Salaries.... 80000
Insurance...18000
Water....... 3000
TOTAL..... 101,000

Monthly Report May

Written by Teacher Margaret

Jambo y'all.
We have come to the end of April which would have seen us open for the second term of this year. As we all know, schools were closed indefinitely due to Covid - 19. Our government announced 31 more days for the schools to remain closed. I have been able to visit happy day families ( observing the set down rules) during this pandemic and I can report that life is hard. Most of the happy day families ( almost all of them) live in abject poverty and cannot therefore afford essential items and especially now that we are required to stay at home to stop the virus. Our families are affected greatly because our parents live on daily wages of below a dollar per day. Right now they don't have any form of income and so what I have witness is far more worse than what I knew. Families are going for a day or two without food until when a well-wisher like you and me appears to give some help. We at happy day are blessed to have gotten assistance in form of food, soap and tissue paper from our friends, family and supporters in Norway. May each one of you be blessed . I am still waiting for some face masks from a friend of mine so that I can distribute to the families. During my visits I found out that most of them don't have this very important items which happens to be a requirement. If one is found without a mask they get arrested by the police and are taken for forced quarantine.
The government requires that if a person, a group or an organization wants to distribute food they go through the area administration. Am happy to report that we have experienced great cooperation from our local authority. They promised to always give us security when we have items to give to our families.
We are very grateful that we at least helped a family put food on the table. It's much an eye opener to me that people are suffering out here.

We don't have much about academics to report about because our government has set up online learning for students and they have tv programs too. Our happy day families don't have access to any form of internet and most of them don't have a tv set. Those who have a tv cannot afford to pay for the monthly subscription so that their kids can study via the kids channel. So we have to wait until schools open for our kids to learn.

OUR APRIL/ MAY BUDGET IS AS FOLLOWS ::::
salaries.....    80000
Insurance...  18000
Water.....        1500
Food.......       50000
TOTAL......  149500

Extra salary due to hard times.....40000

Total.........189500

Monthly Report April

Written by Teacher Margaret

Jambo y'all. Trust you are well and keeping safe during this period of Corona virus. We too are trying to keep safe and to stay home despite the tough economic times. As you all know most of our families live from hand to mouth and cannot afford to buy food in large quantities. So we are hardest hit when it comes to staying at home. Recently as I was giving food and soap to families, I could see the fear in the eyes of the parents. Fear of how they would survive this period when the kids are not in school. The uncertainty caused by this virus is very evidently witnessed. As we all know, our happy day kids mostly depends on the food we give in school and do right now parents are overwhelmed by the stay at home situation. Most of our parents earn less than a dollar a day and currently working isn't allowed ( they are labourers in people's houses and a nearby quarry.) It is so hard for the families especially now that Kenya is reporting new cases every day and we might soon have a total lockdown. My prayer is that a cure or maybe a vaccine is soon discovered. If the cases escalate then we might be hit hard. We don't know when schools will be reopened but we just have to wait and pray.

We are grateful that we were able to give some food to our families. May each one of you who made it possible be blessed always.
Our March / April budget is as follows:

Salaries.... 75,000
Insurance...14,000
Water...........3,000
TOTAL......92000
-.Pre paid salaries 38000
= 54,000

It is my humble request that if possible we get the usual food money so that we can give more food, soap and tissues to our happy day families. Our monthly food costs approximately 50,000.
We will appreciate.
Thanks and take care of yourselves.
Much love from us

Monthly Report March

Written by Teacher Margaret

Jambo y'all. Trust you are all well and good. We at Happy Day are also doing well and we are grateful to you all for the continued support.
We are at the middle of the first term and 2020. Much changes have happened with the change of system in the education ministry. We are copping well though the system is a bit demanding on all parties including teacher's, children, parents and the community at large. We have improvised most of the learning materials and teaching aid for our children to learn better. We have also had to buy some but this has proved to be hard especially on the parents. This month of much we require every parent to buy a scrap book for their child @ 500 kshs. We know most of them will not be able to afford but we are optimistic that they will try since we have let them know that the system involves a lot of bought items which the school can't always provide.
Our staff are doing well and I am very grateful to them for their dedication to the children at Happy Day.

Our FEB / MARCH budget is as follows:
SALARIES...... 75000
CHAI.............24000
FOOD......26000
FUEL.......2400
WATER....... 3000
STATIONARY..... 10000

TOTAL........ 140,400

SPECIAL REQUEST FOR SCRAPBOOKS....
We assume that around 20 parents will afford to buy the books for their children. We request that the school can buy for the remaining 30 children because they have to have them . This will cost us

30 books @ 500 = 15000.
This is a kind request.

Have a blessed new month and be blessed always for your continued support to the happy day family

Monthly Report February

Written by Teacher Margaret

Jambo you all. I hope you are all doing well and I hope you started the year 2020 well. We at Happy Day Junior school started at a higher note after the long Christmas holidays. The first term is ongoing and it's all systems go with the new competence based curriculum of education. We are trying our best to cope with the new changes. The system is a very busy one for all including parents, teachers and the children. All must participate in the day to day learning. Most of the learning in this system involves observation from the parents and the teachers. It's mostly about handwork. Practicals are more than the theory part of learning. Tangible items and things are used in almost all the activities. We have to improvise most of the learning and teaching materials from locally available things though we also have to buy some. We will keep on updating the happenings of the system as time goes by.

Most of the kids are back and we always do new admission or enrollment every beginning of first term for the playgroup class. This are children ages between 3 - 4 years. In the current system this class is mostly learning through singing, playing, and touching. We have also done a few new admission for the other classes. We have 48 children as of Friday 31st January 2020.

Monthly Report January

Written by Teacher Margaret

Happy new year to all of you Happy Day family, friends, pupils and staff. I hope this finds you well . We too are fine.
We are scheduled to open school on 6th January 2020 for the first term. We have had a very long stay at home for the holidays. We are happy that at last we are going back to happy day junior school and meet each other.
We are very grateful for the Christmas food that our families received during the holidays. We bless each person who gave towards the same.
As we usher in the new year, we have high hopes that 2020 will be a better year for us both in academic and social life. As you all know, the new curriculum is in place and each one of us is looking forward to embracing the new changes. Through the system, our children will not be given numbers according to their academic performance, they will be graded according to their abilities in every activity undertaken..... Children will be under constant observation from their teachers. In the previous system, pre School took 3 years, primary school 8 years, high school 4 years then University took as many years as required by a student's course.
The current system starts with playgroup, pre primary 1, pre primary 2, then a child proceed to lower primary ( this includes grade 1,2 and 3), they then go to upper primary ( grade 4, 5 and 6). From grade 6 they go to junior high school for 3 years, then to senior high school for 3 more years. After high school they join the national youth service before joining the university.

Due to the changes in the curriculum, we have had a lot going on. We had to be trained again, we had to buy new text books, we had and still have to get new teaching aids and we also had to engage the parents more in the day to day happenings. Our parents had to hand make some learning materials for their kids as we also play our roll. We will keep updating you on interesting activities and challenges as they occur.

WE WISH YOU ALL A HAPPY, BLESSED AND PEACEFUL 2020.

Hopefully we will all be back for this terms learning. Teacher kellis will be back after her maternity leave to continue with her class. This will be a very busy term especially with the curriculum based system. Our kids will be having many practical lessons than theory. This will enable children and teachers to identify and nurture talents and abilities. My phone camera isn't working well I would have sent you some pictures of handmade learning materials made by use. I will ask someone to take pics for me. During the holidays I made aprons out of gunny sacks, dustpans out of old plastic containers ,brooms out of sticks and dustbins out of old containers. This will be used in teaching about hygiene and creativity. We will update more as we too are still learning about the new curriculum

Monthly Report June

Written by Teacher Margaret

Good morning happy day family...
We hope you are all doing well. We at happy day are doing well especially now that four of us have started training for the new curriculum of education. We feel charged up for the task ahead of us. We have now learnt how to go about with the new system of education and we are most grateful to those who have enabled us to get this very important knowledge. Be blessed.
We will start updating on our wall the kids progress as per the system so that you and us can help the kids to grow wholely. The new system is all about identification of talents and abilities in our kids especially on life skills so that they can learn on issues that concern their field of interest. We have been taught how to create a portfolio for each kid so that we can start monitoring their likes and dislikes. We hope to continue giving them the best that we can. The new system requires lots of tangible material because its not about writing, its more of mind development. Each child needs to have a personal file, manilla papers, a pair of scissors, stick glue, a ruler , a pencil and a maker pen. We have asked the parents to buy the items for their children but unfortunately most of them haven't bought. We will also need modelling clay and water colours. We hope to get this items so that we can teach what we have been taught. We will always give progress reports of every child to their parents through grading ( no more numbers). We have been giving numbers according to the marks gained. From the highest to the lowest

Our kids need lots of exposure outside the walls of happy day junior school so that they can have real life experience of what they will learn in class. This will enable them to expand their minds on what they want to do when they grow up. All of our happy day kids are from financially unstable families and they haven't been away from their informal neighborhood except those who have gone for school tour at happy day. We wish to take them for an educational tour once more by next term.
Teacher Kellis is still away for maternity leave and we wish her and the newborn baby all the best. She will be back in three months time

Our June/July budget is as follows
Salaries......... 75000
Chai...............21000
Food...............25000
Gas..................2400
Insurance...... 14000
Water...............3000
Stationary....... 5000

TOTAL........... 145,400

Thanks once more and have a blessed new month.
Lots of love from Happy Day junior school administration, staff , children and parents. Be blessed

Monthly Report April

Written by Teacher Margaret

Jambo you all.
We hope this finds you well. We at happy day are doing well and we are currently doing our end term exams. Schools are closing on Friday this week. Our staff and children are all busy doing the exams. This term has been a busy term for us because in February we had visitors from Norway who kept us busy. After the visitors went back home we participated in a children's rally in Umoja and it was a nice experience for us all.
Our teachers are required to train for the new system of education so that they can teach the relevant material to the kids. Tr. Mary has enrolled into a teachers training college for the same. The new system has come with new challenges which include a change of all text books in all classes, a change in general approach of all thematic areas and a big change in sociology. We hope that by the end of this year all of us will be re- trained for the new curriculum.
One of the kids who had been staying very far away from school has since relocated to a house nearby the school. Thank you so much to Annelene, Tina and the students from their school who have made this possible.
We are closing school on Friday 5th April for the easter holidays and we will reopen on 30th April for second term. We did 10 new admissions for baby class this term.
We have vaccinated 2 of the kids against typhoid which had been a point of concern for a long time. Thanks to those who enabled that. The other 8 need to be screened on the same, treated then vaccinated so that we can have children that are free from typhoid.

Our March/April budget is as follows
SALARIES.. . .  75000
INSURANCE... 14000
WATER...............3000
CHAI...................5200
FOOD..................6500

Monthly Report March

Written by Teacher Margaret

Jambo our happy day family. We hope that you are doing well. We at happy day are doing good and feeling energized after the recent visit by B-O-K Group from Norway. We are very grateful for coming and giving the kids hope for tomorrow. Thank you for the home visits to a few of happy day families. The visiting group at least got to know the actual situations of the children we have here. We had a week full of positive energy and we also had a party full of music, food, kids games and above all full of happiness. Such events gives the kids lifetime experiences.

This term has seen us admit 10 new kids in our baby class. Our criteria of admitting is that we take very vulnerable kids who if not admitted will not go to school due to poverty. I will give a few insights on some of our kids.

JUSTUS KIMANZI
He is a 9yr old boy from a very poor background. He entirely depends on happy day meals. His mother is a stay at home mom since she is very poor and she also has a small baby. Justus is the eldest in a family of 4 children.... Happy day buys him school uniform when what he has becomes worn out. He is soon leaving happy day to another school and we don't know what will happen to him then

MARION NABWIRE
Marion is 8yrs old... She also comes from a very poor background. The family had been living new our school until when they were evicted from the iron sheet structure by the landlord because they were unable to pay rent. As at now she walks to and from school every a distance of around 10 kilometers.... She too mostly depends on the school meals.... Her mother is jobless and had kept her at home after schools opened because she didn't have the requirements... We looked for her and asked her to let Marion come to school even with nothing.

This are just two cases that I have highlighted. We will highlight each and every happy day child by the end of this term.

Our newly admitted kids are also in need of screening, treatment and vaccination against typhoid ... Typhoid had been a big cause of absenteeism until last year when our kids, the staff and some of the families went through the process.... We also think the the new kids should go through the process. We have already started with 2 of them who are currently under treatment

Our february / march budget is as follows
Salaries....... 75000
Chai.............21000
Food............25000
Gas................2400
Insurance.... 14000

We now have a new system of education and at happy day its only teacher Mary and I who have trained for the same. The rest of the teachers will have to train as we progress.

We are eagerly waiting for the arrival of our friends and visitors from Norway in this month of February

We are closing school on Friday 2nd Nov, 2018 for Christmas holidays. We will have our graduation on the same day. This is the longest period of time that the kids are away from school. We all know that 95% of the happy day kids are from very poor families and so the two months that they will be at home are a big big challenge to the families. Most families cannot afford a meal every day unlike when we are in school then they are sure of eating lunch, breakfast and porridge during break time. Its our humble request that if possible we buy some foodstuffs to give to them on closing day to take home with them. We think that if they can get each a 2kg packet of maize flour, 2kg rice, 2kg packet of wheat flour, bar soap, 1 ltr cooking oil, salt and 1 kg sugar then we will have helped the families a bit during the month of November.

October/Nov budget

Monthly Report September/October

Written by Teacher Margaret

Jambo Happy Day family We at happy day are doing well and we hope you all are doing fine.
We have come to the second month of third term 2018 and we are very grateful for your continued support.
This month our school scouts are supposed to go for a camp at the Nairobi show ground during the Nairobi agricultural show. Unfortunately this is impossible since the school has no money and the parents can't afford to pay for their kids. However, we are glad that the scouts teacher will go to represent us at her own cost. When she comes back she will be refreshed and she will teach new ideas from the camp. The Nairobi agricultural show is an exhibition of how food is grown, harvested and stored. It is also an exhibition of how other items are made. There is also fun sports for kids and much more.
This month will see our pre unit class graduate to grade 1. The ceremony will be held at the Jehovah jire secondary school ground ( where we had the party and the bouncing castle when the principal and mama Erica were in Kenya) This is also the shortest academic term in Kenya and so schools are closing mid next month and that's why we have the graduations this month

The area ECD schools met last week and we are happy to be members of the group. This enables us to know what is happening around and to interact with our neighbouring schools. We are planning on doing interschool exams at the end of the term

There has been an increase in almost all the items in Kenya due to the increase in vat taxes

Our sept/Oct budget is as follows

Salaries.......... 75,000
Chai................21,000
Food...............25,000
Gas refill..........2,500
Insurance...... 14,000
Water................3,000
Stationery.........5,000
TOTAL........145,900

Thanks and have a blessed week ahead

Monthly Report July/August

Written by Teacher Margaret

I hope you are all doing well. We too are doing fine.
Happy day is opening school on 3rd September 2018 after the August holidays break. During the break we were able to vaccinate 48 kids for typhoid. We weren't able to take pictures because it was done in a government facility called njiru health centre. The remaining people will be vaccinated as soon as we open school next week. This will happen at happy day then we can take some pictures. Most of those who have not been vaccinated had either traveled with their parents upcountry or couldn't be reached on phone after closing day.
Today teacher Mary is attending an ECDE (early childhood development and education) teachers seminar at the bridge international school. This will keep happy day updated on matters that concern the early childhood education.
Third term is the shortest term of the year. Schools close early to enable the grade 8 and form 4 candidates to do their national examination. Third term has many activities in the school calendar. Our pre- unit class will graduate to the grade one class in November. During this term we will have an inter schools ball games that will take place in our neighbouring school. This will include all informal schools around including happy day. We will also have the mid and end term exams for all kids. Second term saw us go to the animal orphanage in Nairobi. It was a really good experience for all of us at happy day. Thanks so much Marianne for paying for all of us to go to the orphanage. We are hoping to take the kids to the mamba village and ostrich center by the end of the term... This is because we realised during a children's rally that was held early this year that this kids lack an outside exposure. We want them to realise that there is life away from their homes and away from their usual environment
